Rich Robinson is now heading a new band, The Magpie Salute.  The band brings Rich Robinson, the guitarist and co-founding member of The Black Crowes, together with two key members of Crowes fame – guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien – alongside drummer Joe Magistro and guitarist Nico Bereciartua. The Magpie Salute also boasts a fine cast of vocalists, including lead singer John Hogg (Hookah Brown, Moke), former Crowes singer Charity White and background singers, Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen.

Their self-titled debut album comes out June 9th.  Check out the video for the single “Omission.”

The Magpie Salute will also be on the road for an extensive tour.  Coincidently, both TMS and CRB will be on the road, for the most part, concurrently:

Both brothers have said the Black Crowes will be no more, so enjoy these two incarnations when they come to your town.

REVIEW: Nightlands

I Can Feel The Night Around Me – Western Vinyl

by Jorge Almaraz

By the hand of Western Vinyl, Dave Hartley presents Nightlands’ third and most ambitious album to date, I Can Feel the Night Around Me. With his easy listening/dream science genre, Hartley display an interesting project replete with soft melodies that get you lost in a peaceful atmosphere.

As with previous Nightlands’ projects, Hartley’s ability to overlay his voice to create that feeling of complete tranquility is the most remarkable aspect of the album. The choral arrangements are excellent and the audio in general creates a hypnotic sound, perfect to listen and sink into the vast world every song presents to you.  A new listener may find it difficult to believe that Nightlands is actually a one-man band.

However, it may seem that the Philadelphia-native composer focuses a little too much on creating such peaceful atmosphere and does not try to further develop the meaning of his songs.  Without lyrics that actually get to connect with the listener, the albums at times gets to feel, somehow, repetitive.

As mentioned before, this is Nightlands most ambitious project. Therefore, a high-quality music video should be expected. After presenting a horribly animated video for his single “Lost Moon”, Hartley redeemed himself with a newly released video for Nightlands’ song “You’re Silver.”  Directed by Daniel Fox and Matthew Marchlewski, this video proves that something as simple as a drive to his studio can be an impressive source of inspiration. The video takes regular footage of Philadelphia’s streets and combines it with splendid special effects that perfectly matches the theme of the album in general.

On the Great Beyond planetary ratings scale, this album gets a solid landing on Earth.  The album is impressive and interesting but still lacks that extra something.

REVIEW: Little Reader – The Big Score

By: Jorge Almaraz

Put some headphones on and let the music flow through your body. With a ten-track debut album, Little Reader takes you on a fantastic voyage, which explores the multi-dimensionality of love while using a danceable, and somewhat psychedelic, pop tunes as the base of the project.

Produced by Mark Watrous of The Shins, The Big Score is the debut of the duo composed by Nashville-based Kate Tucker and Los Angeles-based Ross Flournoy. This unexpected, yet impressive, collaboration take each of The Big Score´s songs and manages to give each of them a distinctive sound without losing the main style of the album.  From beginning to end, the album keeps you interested in melodies and lyrics that do not sound repetitive in absolute; clearly demonstrating the immense talent of both songwriters to score in the music world.

The album kicks off with “Speed of Light,” a track that may be considered the most representative song of the band so far. “Speed of Light” starts with an energetic, upbeat sound with classical love-related lyrics that sets the tone of the album, which highlights Tucker´s talent as a singer. In my opinion, tracks such as “Light as a Feather,” “Running Toward the Sun,” and “Love Lust Life” are some of the pieces that make The Big Score such an interesting album.

However, it is worth mention that both songwriters have already found success in the music world, by writing for others, prior their collaboration together. Flournoy has written musical themes for TV shows, but his work may be better identified in Jake Tapper´s CNN Show. Meanwhile, Tucker has found success working on film scoring and soundtracks for several independent movies and TV shows.

As proof of Little Reader´s potential, you may listen to their single Speed of Light on season 4, episode 16, of the Fox acclaimed sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” An event that also caught them by surprise.

This album clearly lands on Mercury – a fantastic album that is already causing a considerable impact.
