When Cats Claw

Make a list of every metaphor you can come up for outer space and it has most likely been used to describe Shabazz Palaces.  Truthfully, I still can’t come up with something concise to tell you readers what to expect.  The only solution to this quandary is to listen and judge for yourself.

Sounds From The Superhighway – Song of the Day: Alan Getto

Soap In My Whiskey

This is one of those fun little numbers that grows on you with each play.   And, YES, one could substitute the words to “Goodnight Irene” and sing along to the melody, but it doesn’t make this song any less pleasing to the ear.  In fact, I found it quite endearing listening to Getto sings about sobriety.

According to Alan Getto’s bio, “Inspired by paradoxical elements of life and examining his own transition into his current lifestyle, Getto finds a perfect balance between various dualities through his artistic expression.”

His debut album, Versus, comes out August 18th.

“Me & The 99”

SOHtortugabw350-2000x350

Because of the cultural diversity of New Mexico, the music produced in the Land of Enchantment brings many flavors to the table.  Son of Hwéeldi is another fine example of the allure of the aesthetic beauty in the sounds of the great southwest.

JJ Otero is lead vocalist, guitarist and chief songwriter for the band once known as Saving Damsels.  Their new album is entitled 019910 and it was nominated for three New Mexico Music Awards where the band won for Best Rock CD and Best Native Track (To’ ei ííná át’e’).  You can catch the band performing at the New Mexico State Fair Indian Village on both September 9th and 14th.  Until then, enjoy this politically charged tour-de-force from 019910.

Sounds From The Superhighway – Song of the Day: Gordi

“Heaven I Know”

I must admit that when I first began playing this single, the ghostly counting of “1, 2, 3…1, 2” threw me off.  I wasn’t sure how I felt about this one.  In fact, I had relegated the email announcing the release of the video for “Heaven I Know” to the trash bin.  Well, curiosity began to get the better of me and I went back, fished it out, played it again and then once more and I was hooked.

24 year old Sophie Payten, a/k/a Gordi, soaks the songs on her forthcoming album, Reservoir, August 25th on Jagjaguwar, with as much sadness and loss as one can handle.  She, however, does so with such craftsmanship and precision that one is given no choice but to listen and admire the work.

Gordi will tour North American in August.  Go to her website at https://gordi.bandcamp.com/

“Robbers”

In today’s world, it seems we are left to do whatever is necessary to simply survive. From Los Angeles, CA, comes Youngblood Hawke and their new video “Robbers.”  According to the band, “Robbers” “…addresses the dizzying experience of our modern world.  The single is a flashing collage of technology, violence, planetary exploitation and the comforts of hometown roads changing before your eyes.”

No tour dates are currently scheduled and no other album or single information is available, so enjoy this one.

“River Days”

You ever feel like things just aren’t going your way.  No matter how hard you try, you feel stuck and unable to move forward.  Sometimes I wonder if our world isn’t in that state of being.  From Richmond, VA comes Andrew Carter and his band, Minor Poet, with today’s SFTS “Song of the Day.”

“River Days” is the second singe from the band’s forthcoming debut, And How!, released in August on Egghunt Records.  On the song, Carter advices listeners that when life gives you lemons, you simply go with the flow.

Sounds From The Superhighway – Song of the Day: Kazyak

When I Lived in Carolina

What does “normal” sound like?  Of course, the answer to that question can be rather elusive considering the subjective nature of the term.  For songwriter/guitarist Peter Frey, the answer is simple.

“With Happy Camping, the band has reached a steady state with sound, lineup, age/maturity, and life. Simply, we’ve struck balance. The band is experiencing normalcy at a sustained pace.”

Couple that with a wedding and a trip to Alaska, where he and his wife-to-be set up camp atop a glacier, things seem to be looking up for Frey as he sings the lines “The tighter I close my eyes / the clearer I see” on “When I Lived in Carolina.”  This slice of Americana is simple, intimate, soothing and, for Frey, therapeutic.

Kazyak’s self-released new album, Happy Camping, comes out July 21st.

Making Movies at Meow Wolf, Santa Fe, NM

June 6, 2017 with Hurray For The Riff Raff

It was my first trip to Meow Wolf and Making Movies made the trip that much more special.  Two sets of brothers make up the four members of this bold mix of sounds from Kansas City, MO.

WAIT….DID YOU SAY KANSAS CITY, MO?

It’s a long story for another day, but, trust me, it is worth hearing.  As for the music, the band owned the stage that evening.  Every track building on the previous one.  they even returned at the end of HFTRR’s set for an explosive jam version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark.”

Below is a photo essay of the evening.  Enjoy.

Monday, July 17, 2017

“Sugar”

For those of you in the Albuquerque / Santa Fe area, be sure to catch Beach Fossils tomorrow night at Meow Wolf with She-Devils.  BTW, if you haven’t been to Meow Wolf, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?!?

“Sugar” is the latest single from the band’s recent release, Somersault, on Bayonet Records.  The majority of the video was filmed on the east side of Manhattan in New York City.  You will also notice skateboards prominently featured.  That’s because BF have teamed up with Habitat Skateboards on a custom skateboard.

After the Meow Wolf show in Santa Fe, the band have three more stops on their west coast tour before making their way across the pond for dates in Europe and then returning for east coast dates beginning in October.

Tickets for Santa Fe are $15 in advance and $19 at the door.  Meow Wolf is located at 1352 Rufina Circle in Santa Fe.  Yu can purchase tickets online at www.meowwolf.com.
